Benefits of Using Essential Oils in your Hair Gel


Our last post covered the benefits of flax seeds and in this post, we will outline the amazing benefits of essential oils and why they are "essential" in your hair gel! 


We use 5 essential oils in our Flaxin Hair Gel.  These were handpicked from a plethora of oils and ingredients out there as part of a meticulous process of research, customer feedback, and constantly iterating not only on the oils used but the amounts used are at a safe level in order to ensure we passed dermatologist testing and ensure it is hypoallergenic.  So, why did these 5 make the cut after 2 years in the lab?

1. Rosemary Oil: has tremendous health benefits known to improve, repair, and restore the scalp.  In addition, Rosemary oil is also a great natural preservative that helps prevent oxidative decay in our all natural hair gel.  Below are some of the specific details:

  • Carnosic acid is one of the key ingredients in the Rosemary plant.  With it's antioxidant and antimicrobial properties carnosic acid has been shown to heal nerve damage and restore tissue in the scalp. 
  • Efficient blood flow is one of the most important factors in hair growth (and loss), and with age this flow gets restricted.  Effectively suffocating your hair and depriving them of oxygen and vital nutrients.  Rosemary oil is great at boosting blood circulation which helps stimulate hair follicles and keep them healthy / thriving.
  • Rosemary has an anti-inflammatory effect and therefore improves cellular regeneration. This helps aid hair growth and thickness.
  • Rosemary has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties which breaks down any unhealthy build up at the hair follicles and opens up those pores. 
Fun Fact 📚 : 
A 2015 study compared rosemary oil and minoxidil (commercially known as Rogaine) in the treatment of humans with alopecia (aka hair loss). Results showed that both rosemary oil and minoxidil resulted in a significant hair growth at the 6-month usage mark.

2. Eucalyptus Oil: is a rich source of several nutrients and minerals.  Similar to Rosemary oil, it Eucalyptus oil has antiseptic, antifungal, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and anti-bacterial properties.  Specifically for your hair & scalp, they have the same benefits mentioned above as Rosemary oil has which include stimulation of the hair follicles that promotes hair growth.  In addition to these benefits, here some more: 

  • Eucalyptus oil offers itchy scalp relief 
  • Eucalyptus oil treats / prevents head lice
    (great for kids or I guess adults with questionable activities Thinking Face on Apple )
  • Eucalyptus oil is great for restoring the lost shine of your hair since it increases the number of "ceramides" in the scalp and hair.  Ceramides hold the moisture in your hair which allows light to bounce off it and appear shiny ✨

3. Tea Tree Oil: is similar to Eucalyptus oil for keeping your scalp free of irritation and head lice.  It also acts as another great natural preservative in our hair gel.  In addition, tea tree oil is known for being one of the best natural remedies for dandruff.  This essential oil acts as a natural conditioner for the scalp and eliminates agents that cause skin to flake.  Below are more specific details: 

  • Tea tree oil has anti-fungal properties and is a great cleanser which helps treat dandruff by cleaning grime and dead skin cells as well as ensuring your hair follicles remain free of build up. 
  • Tea tree oil nourishes and moisturizes the scalp and controls excess oil production by the sebaceous glands, keeping the scalp free of dandruff.
  • Tea tree oil improves blood flow and allows nutrients to reach hair follicles, balances the pH level of the scalp, and stimulates the hair growth cycle
  • Dandruff is a common cause for hair loss as hair that grows on a dandruff-infected scalp suffers a great amount of cuticle and protein damage.  Inflammation and scratching the scalp also leads to breakage and hair loss.  As tea tree oil is effective in soothing the scalp and treating dandruff, it can also prevent excessive hair fall.  Dandruff and excess sebum can block hair follicles, making hair roots weak and resulting in hair fall. 

Fun Fact 📚 : 
Dandruff appears to be related to the yeast "Pityrosporum ovale". Tea tree oil has anti-fungal properties with activity against P-ovale and may be useful in the treatment of dandruff according to this study.

Tea tree oil also has insecticidal effects and as such, it can be used to treat head lice, parasitic insects that feed on blood. According to this study, it has been found that a 30-minute tea tree oil treatment results in 100% mortality and that a treatment with higher concentration of tea tree oil can induce failure of 50% of existing lice eggs to hatch.

4. Orange Oiladds a refreshing citrus scent to our hair gel.  However its true benefit is realized from the vitamin C that is infused into your hair and scalp which in turn improve overall hair growth and heal scalp skin conditions.  This natural moisturizer essential oil’s properties also reduce the number of blocked pores, allowing your hair to fully exfoliate. 

5. Coconut Oil:   is THE miracle oil for your hair!  Vitamins and fatty acids in coconut oil help nourish your scalp and penetrates the cuticles of your hair to deliver the much needed vitamins.  Here are some specific details on why coconut oil is an essential ingredient in our all natural hair gel:  

  • Coconut oil moisturizes your hair and therefore reduces breakage
  • Coconut oil is great for taming curly hair and preventing frizzy hair
  • Coconut oil creates a shield for and protects your hair from protein loss and from environmental damage caused by wind, sun and smoke

Fun Fact 📚 :
Studies like this one have confirmed the adverse effects on your hair from UV radiation from the sun.  Coconut oil contains natural "UV blocking" properties which when applied to your hair and scalp which can help protect your hair from sun damage.  This study found coconut oil to have a sun protection factor of 8.  While this doesn't replace the need to have SPF 30 lotions on the rest of your body, it certainly provides some protection against the sun by having our hair gal on your hair and scalp all day long.
